The name Chiba derives from two kanji characters meaning 'thousand leaves' and first appears as an ancient regional command office. The name was adopted by a branch of the Taira clan that moved to the area in the late Heian period, becoming the Chiba clan, which held strong influence until the Azuchi–Momoyama period. Early records mention Taira Tsuneshige, a bushi warlord who moved to Shimōsa Province in the late Heian period, proclaimed himself Chiba Tsuneshige, and used present-day Chiba City as a power base. His son Chiba Tsunetane aided Minamoto no Yoritomo in establishing the Kamakura shogunate. The area became a castle town and prospered under the Chiba clan until the Muromachi period, when their power declined due to regional wars. In the Edo period, various clans governed the area, and Chiba prospered as a post-town of the Tokugawa shogunate. Large-scale land reclamation expanded the city throughout the 20th century.
